I think the quote specifically relates to coaches because it really focuses on "best practices." As coaches, we need to help teachers see that critical thinking should be at the core of all classes, students are the "sense makers." We need to share with teachers that students are able to make sense of any content when teachers deliberatiely plan instruction that provides opportunities for students to think, discuss, reflect, and revise their understanding of the material. No matter the content, the philosophy and principles of coaching are constant. The difference is how it is carried out in the content classes.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"72816744","dateCreated":"1427392704","smartDate":"Mar 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"jdress1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jdress1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/arincoaches.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/72816744"},"dateDigested":1532428218,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Math","description":"The coach has a similar role in each classroom, rather a math classroom or social studies classroom. This role is to support the teacher in incorporating literacy strategies and objectives. The difference is that in math, the content is often numbers and therefore does not lend itself to reading, writing and talking math. However, in my opinion, a paradigm shift is needed. Teachers need to begin to think of math as a foreign language. As a foreign language is taught by linking a word to something concrete and tangible, the vocabulary of math must also be linked to a concrete, tangible activity or topic. In this way, students will have the tools they need to successfully "discuss" the manner in which problems are solved.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"72816698","dateCreated":"1427392638","smartDate":"Mar 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"skovach1313","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/skovach1313","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/arincoaches.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/72816698"},"dateDigested":1532428218,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Coaching in the Math Classroom","description":"In a math classroom, the role of the coach is very similar and different than coaching in other content areas. Coaching in the math classroom and other content areas requires the coach to think about ways in which the math teacher can incorporate strategies that will not only enhance the skills in those content areas but also incorporate literacy skills. Coaching in all content areas help students to generate and share their ideas while also critically thinking. However, a coach needs to be able to help math teachers to share their thinking by answering "how did you get that?" Math problems and situations can be solved in various ways, and it is important to "explain not only what they did but also why they did it." Knowing what to do with students' responses to that question and teaching students to meaningfully participate in discussions can be more daunting in a math classroom. The math teacher will need to focus more on the process rather than the product.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"72816666","dateCreated":"1427392537","smartDate":"Mar 26, 2015","userCreated":{"username":"emilydup","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/emilydup","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/arincoaches.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/72816666"},"dateDigested":1532428218,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Coaching in the Math Classroom cont.","description":"I also think, like I mentioned in the discussion, that the math learning process is very similar to how I've taught writing.
